What are caffeine pouches?

Caffeine pouches are small, soft pouches that you place under your upper lip. They look like snus pouches, but contain no tobacco and no nicotine. Instead, the pouch contains caffeine and, depending on the brand, other ingredients. They are also called energy pouches or caffeine snus.

Optimal Native has three formulas for different parts of the day: Morning Energy, Daily Flow and the caffeine-free Evening Relax.

How much caffeine is in a caffeine pouch?

It varies between brands, so always check the label. Here is how Optimal Native compares with common drinks:

Product Serving Caffeine
Morning Energy 1 pouch 200 mg
Daily Flow 1 pouch 75 mg
Evening Relax 1 pouch 0 mg
Filter or instant coffee 200 ml about 90 mg
Espresso 1 shot about 80 mg
Energy drink 250 ml about 80 mg
Black tea 250 ml about 55 mg

How much caffeine a day?

The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) says up to 400 mg of caffeine a day does not raise safety concerns for healthy adults, and neither do single doses of up to 200 mg. For pregnant women the level is 200 mg a day. For children, 3 mg per kilogram of body weight is used as a reference (EFSA, 2015).

All caffeine during the day counts: coffee, tea, cola, energy drinks and caffeine pouches. One Morning Energy and two Daily Flow pouches add up to 350 mg, which leaves about 50 mg for other caffeine that day.

Caffeine pouches compared with coffee and energy drinks

  • Amount: a pouch states its caffeine on the label. In a cup of coffee it depends on the beans, strength and cup size.
  • Format: nothing to brew or carry. A can of 20 pouches fits in your pocket.
  • Energy drinks: a 250 ml can contains about 80 mg of caffeine, bigger cans more.
  • Sugar: Optimal Native pouches are sugar-free. Many energy drinks contain sugar.

How to use caffeine pouches

  1. Place one pouch under your upper lip.
  2. Keep it there for 20–40 minutes.
  3. Dispose of the pouch after use.

One pouch at a time. Do not exceed the stated recommended daily dose. Not recommended for children or pregnant or breast-feeding women. Keep out of reach of young children.
